Clearing acne scars on arms and back

10:43 pm - 07/15/2009
Hey guys. Sorry for posting again so soon.

I have HORRIBLE acne scarring on my upper arms and back from obsessively picking at zits due to stress and anxiety. Big, angry red ones. :( It's not current acne, just scars.

I've been using an AHA night cream on my face with EXCELLENT results, but when I use it on my arms and back, it does nothing. I'm not sure if it's because the skin on my face is more delicate and thus the cream can penetrate better, or if it's wearing off on my arms throughout the night (I'm a horrible, violent sleeper so it wouldn't surprise me)/not absorbing or what.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd be willing to spend for something if it'll work, but drugstore stuff is good too! I can't afford anything like chemical peels or microdermabrasion though.

TIA loves!

Can you wear the cream during the day on your arms?

I've been putting it on my arms for maybe two days now during the day, thinking it's that, but so far, so results. I know, I have to give it time but there was a near immediate result with my face, so it was disappointing.

*no results. Jesus on whole wheat crackers I'm so tired, haha.

I have a bunch of acne scars on my back :( I feel your pain

It's so annoying. I have to wear a tee or an elbow length sleeve shirt and even when I wear shortsleeves, you can see the scars and it's just UGH. It's one of the VERY few things on my body that actually upset me, mostly because I know I did it to myself.

what kind of aha cream have u been using on your face? i have a small scar from a mole removal that id like gone...
letsgotothemoon 16th-Jul-2009 03:44 am (UTC)
Hrm. It's just the Walgreens generic one. Something like 8% in a lotion? White tub with black lid. Maybe like $7.

If you're not acne prone, you should try Merderma! I was using that on mine for awhile but it broke me out like whoa and made the whole situation worse.

I dont really have any advice, but maybe using a body scrub on those areas more, to try and manually exfoliate the skin away??

I saw your response to another comment, but can you tell me which ingredients are in your walgreens AHA? I live in australia and we dont have a walgreens here, so i obviously cant get that brand! Cause im also looking for something decent to give me results on my few acne scars on my jaw! Thankyou!

Sure. Do you mind if I reply later to this when I get home?

So sorry this has taken so long! I totally forgot, sorry sorry sorry!

Anyway. The front of the jar says 8% AHA of 70% solution. I think that's pretty standard? Anything higher would seem to be painful. This stuff does sting a bit when you apply it. I think it ends up being something like 5% overall with the PH? I'm pretty sure some of the ingredients are also parabens, just in case you're concerned about those.

Ingredients: Water, Glycolic Acid, Propylene Glycol, Isopropyl Palmitate, Stearic Acid, Ammonium Hydroxide, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Isostearic Acid, Dimenthicone, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, PEG-40 Stearate, Sorbitan Stearate, Sorbic Acid, BHT, Imidazolidinyl Urea.

Good luck!

My mom used Tazorac (it's a prescription from her dermatologist but it's not expensive) to fade dark spots on her arms-- it should work for that, too. I've been meaning to try it on my acne scars but mine are on my back and it's hella hard for me to get it back there :/
letsgotothemoon 16th-Jul-2009 01:24 pm (UTC)
Tazorac is one of about 20 some medications I've had from dermatologists before (I have a list around here, somewhere) I realized they were just going down their cheat sheets and prescribing me whatever sounded good. I remember fondly the time they prescribed me penicillin when I'm allergic to it, because they couldn't be buggered to read my file.

I really, really don't like derms. Can you tell? Lol.

I might talk to my regular doctor about it (he's pretty chill) and see if he can't prescribe me something though.

Oh maaaan I feel you. It took me several doctors and over ten years before I found someone who could put two and two together and found out I had asthma... And she figured it out within the first ten minutes of my first appointment with her. She was a nurse practitioner, though, which I honestly think is better than a doctor most of the time.

My mom got the Tazorac because she'd had pre-cancer removed from her arm and it's supposed to help prevent skin cancer. It also faded off the dark spots she had pretty quickly. Her derm actually gave her some little sample tubes and it worked so well that she never actually had to buy it.

lol right? i learned about it on the message boards at acne.org. i guess the zinc in it not only helps to dry up acne on your back, but also to fade scars. it's only the classic clean formulation that works, for some reason. every time you get out of the shower, you just spread a layer on your back and wait for it to dry, then get dressed. it's realy uncomfortable for the first week or so because the skin on your back gets so dried out, but after about 2-3 weeks everything is cleared up. the marks start fading almost immediately.
