jiggly thighs

I hope this post doesn't rub someone the wrong way, i don't know any other ways to word this.

I am a skinny girl, around 5 pounds underweight, but it's just due to my metabolism or something because I eat whatever I want. But since it's swimsuit season, my thighs are showing a lot more than they used to. This wouldn't e a problem except for the fact that my thighs jiggle, A LOT. I was looking around at other girls and girls easily twice my size don't have that problem.

I'm like one of those skinny fat girls though, that is to say I'm skinny but I have no muscle at all. Would the solution be to eat healither? I have a horrible diet of junk food, but if I go on a healthier diet I don't want to lose weight, which is a big concern. Or would it be to excersize more? For some reason my logic against that is that the muscle would just jiggle too, or hide underneath the fat, does that make since?

If its excersize, what are some good workout movies to fix this?
And are home workout moves just as effective as hitting the gym?

edit: how many squats or lunges should i do a day? when will i notice improvement?

lmao i am in the exact same situation so i'll be watching this post like a hawk.

i have a pool so i'm going to start swimming, though. it seems like the easiest way to build muscle tone so i'm hoping it works. i also just went grocery shopping for a lot of healthy stuff like yogurt and whole grain bread thinking maybe if i have food in my house i won't go to mcdonalds so much.

work out and stop eating crap. you shouldn't be eating a lot of junk food anyway. it makes you unhealthy and it will catch up with you when get older, no matter how skinny you are now. I agree with the above poster about squats. if you tone up, your thighs won't jiggle anymore.

agreed; my metabolism started to slow a few years ago and slammed me with a nasty shock. To combat it, I've changed my diet and bought a pushbike and a stationary bike and now I ride just about everywhere, which has given me killer thighs, and it's done no small favour for my calves, too. Dietwise, I cut a LOT of processed food out and cook more from raw. I still eat about 100 grams of chocolate a day, because I'm weak like that >_>

I have the same problem. I eat healthy, run, do lunges, squats, etc. It helps out a lot.

It's a common problem and you can solve it easily with just little exercise:) Plain walking keeps my thighs fit (I'm skinny too). You don't necessarily have to change your diet, but junk food = "watery fat" and cellulite :/

Well, eating healthy does not mean you will lose weight. Just replace horrible fast food with healthy fats like olives, nuts, etc. Eating junk food is simply bad for you in the case of chemical additives and preservatives. Believe me, you can eat healthy and still gain weight.

The best thing to do would be to gain some muscle tone in your thighs. Do some weight training including squats and lunges. If you are worried about losing weight while exercising, up your protein levels with a good protein shake.

if you eat healthier, you won't lose weight if you keep up the same calorie intake. trust me- been there, done that. also exercise will help this. i know being skinny it's like: "ARE YOU SERIOUS?" but a little cardio is good for everyone of all sizes. i do intervals of walking and jogging around my block a couple times for cardio and to tone my legs and i don't seem to lose weight- i'm 5' 6" and 112 lbs. if it helps. i think that's about 8-10 lbs. underweight i can't remember, because i stopped caring! haha.

Muscle doesn't jiggle, honey. That's why when someone asks a question on how to "tone up," people always recommend strength-training exercises, which is exactly what you need to do.

I'm going along with the above posters. Do squats and other upper-leg exercises to gain more muscle to help control the jiggle. But be aware that doing strength training by itself is not going to burn the fat off, you'll have to add cardio to actually get rid off the fat itself.

And eat healthier. :D It'll make your body a lot easier to control, appearance-wise.

This is working from the assumption that you're serious. I absolutely do not mean to, or wish to, sound snarky, but... in this troll-ridden, snarked-up world of LiveJournal, YES, I admit I had to glance quickly at your info to be sure. And I'm gonna say it like your older sister's best friend would say it: "Whoa... you're NOT kidding, are you? You really want to know if junk food makes flab, and if exercise would help? That's a YES and a YES and a YES, YES, YES" and I mean this in the best possible way, ZERO sarcasm.

First, the facts, as I see them. Without prettying things up...

1. Junk food = FAT, sick, dull, spotty, mopey, tired. Sure, everyone can have A FEW BITES of something "bad" now and then. But as a rule, "junk in, junk out." In the mouth, out into the cells, and the cells make up your body. Junk food contributes to flab and fatigue, at any weight.

Hydrogenated fats, sugar, dead simple carbs (white flour, processed starches) and artificial ingredients ALL DAMAGE ONE'S LOOKS. They damage one's looks because they damage one's health. And overall, what we think of as "attractive" is the look of HEALTH, fitness, fertility, and cleverness. Human beings are attracted to other human beings who exhibit signs of physical and mental health, as well as intelligence and common sense.

Signs of physical health (clear skin, good breath, clean teeth, bright eyes, strong hair, firm and sleek muscles, body symmetry, and ENOUGH fat for comfort, but NOT so much EXTRA fat that it impedes movement, saps one's energy, and contributes to disease) are "attractive" because humans beings are "attracted" to the principle of SURVIVAL. One stands a better chance of survival with a healthy partner, healthy friends, and a healthy family or "tribe." Physical health is not the WHOLE story - many kinds of intelligence, common sense, responsibility and generosity of spirit are examples of desirable qualities as well - but humanity didn't survive millennia of harsh uncertainties by being attracted to the look of poor health and sedentary living.

2. Physical exercise. See above. Human bodies are designed to MOVE, healthy people tend to move, work, and carry things. And a lack of regular, exuberant, moderate-to-vigorous exercise makes a person weak, sick, and flabby.

3. It takes a combination of good food and good exercise to look "good."


Since I've typed so much, here are a couple of suggestions to get you going.

FORGET the concept of "workout moves." Forget that. Just get moving and exercise your whole body, for a FIRM and BALANCED look. Dance, swim, go to the gym and do 20 of everything in the lowest weights, and repeat the ones you like best. Take ANY dance class or workout class you can manage to fit into your schedule. Make time for 1-3 hours combining aerobic and weight-bearing exercise a day, most days. Walk, walk, walk in between.

For a QUICK guide to good food, start reading anything you can find by Dr. Perricone. He'll say what I say: FRESH GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES, more colorful vegetables, fresh colorful fruits, especially berries, plenty of lean proteins, whole grains, beans, fish oil, olive oil, nuts and nut oils. NO HYDROGENATED ANYTHING. No corn syrup. Spare the sugar.

For a QUICK introduction to firming up, find a Pilates class.

Also: don't smoke. Don't drink more than a glass of wine with dinner a couple of times a week. Eliminate ALL sodas, colas, etc. - both the regular and diet kind, because all soda/cola/etc. drinks upset the metabolism and create weirdly unpleasant problems. ELIMINATE COFFEE, because it does similarly weird, bad things to metabolism, fat, and all that.

The above is merely my opinion and advice, to be taken or left. Judge for yourself, because it's the very best I can do and I don't have time to debate it. :)

1. Running will give you awesome legs, really quickly. Same with other aerobic activities, but it sounds like you don't want to join a gym, so running is a cheap and easy option.

2. I highly recommend picking up a book to get you started with weight training. Sure, you can do squats and lunges in your living room, but without some guidance you can both hurt yourself and end up wasting time and getting no results. I like "The Body Sculpting Bible for Women." You will be able to understand why the exercises work. Plus, if you only do the same exact exercises over and over-your muscles begin to "memorize" them and eventually they become less and less effective. You have to switch up your workouts, and this book gives you perfectly laid out workout plans. Awesome.

The commenter a couple up definitely knows what s/he is talking about! If I were you I would start up some sort of weight training+cardio routine whether from a book or at the gym, who cares...just be sensible when it comes to the efforts/results ratio (duh). Whatever you do if you stick to it you will find positive improvements in your body and if you figure out something you enjoy doing you will probably keep at it... the main thing I have found since I began working out and basically trying to live healthier (except that i started out more chubby rather than "skinny fat") is that if I'm looking in the mirror everyday waiting for this miraculous, sudden change (like, why don't I have perfect thighs yet?) I just get discouraged. My results have become gradually more and more noticeable and I can't overstate how freaking gratifying it is when I realize my love handles have diminished, stomach is smaller, thighs are muscular, etc. Or, like, I was shaving my armpit and noticed, like, holy crap there is a muscle on the underside of my upper arm, it's not just all fat!!! Hehe sorry this comment is long and dumb but SERIOUSlY it's not overnight changes you will see but you can make yourself however you want to be :)

doing it "until it hurts" is a bad idea and is the easiest way to injure yourself. Not recommended.

it's a better approximation, yeah :) to the OP: if you do this, make sure to cool down after, though, because I'm pretty sure that if you don't lactic acid can build up in your muscles and it's not... good.

Muscle won't jiggle.
Basically, you have gain muscle as well as lose the fat that's covering it. To lose fat, you need to have a calorie deficit. Do cardio (walking, running, cycling; whatever you enjoy) and eat cleanly.

To gain muscle, you can do exercises like lunges/squats or the leg press. Doing heavy-weighted lunges and squats with small reps will get you the most effective results more quickly, so I'd say for that you need the gym (unless you have barbells and weights at home). I'd recommend 2-3 sets of 8-12 reps, where the last couple of reps are a challenge to complete with good form. Eating protein is only going to help if you are lifting heavy - it helps the muscles rebuild after a weights session. Along with regular squats and lunges, these kill me!
