Epilator on bikini line

5:47 pm - 05/18/2011
I have very very very sensitive skin. I can't even use normal body wash without my skin getting inflamed and dry--I can only use natural soaps from Chagrin Valley or African Black Soap. Anyway, I would like to try using an epilator on my bikini line. Shaving isn't that helpful since it starts growing back by the end of the day and waxing gives me a horrible rash. I tried threading my eyebrows and I still get a small rash, but it is not that noticeable anymore. Nonethless, I decided to just tweeze my own eyebrows since it's better for my skin.

Should I try using an epilator so stop my hair from growing back so darn quick?

This isn't going to be helpful, but I was wondering the same exact thing last night and was going to post something like this. My skin is extremely sensitive, and shaving my bikini line always ends badly, so I've been wondering this too. I know Braun makes an epilator specifically for the bikini line, so I know it's fine to try it, I just don't don't if it would cause any less irritation.

Man, shaving is horrible. For some reason waxing and tweezing feels better for me (although the wax gives me a rash)... :S

Waxing tore up my skin. :/ I love to be hair-free, but wow is it a hard thing to d. Getting rashes totally defeats the purpose of shaving/waxing/whatever because in the end you still don't have smooth skin!

I have an epilator for my underarms and it HURTS. After I got used to it, there's less irritation (and blood...). But the bikini area, OUCH. I can't even imagine, but that's just me. I know lots of people do it without problems!

You'll at least have red and painful skin, but it's probably nothing some ice can't fix. At least it won't be a chemical problem, like the wax and body washes. Shaving irritates because it scrapes your skin, the epilator won't really do that. I'd say give it a shot and worse case, you can use the epilator for another area.

I figured it was because of the razor scraping my skin too :/ good I think I'll buy the one that's made for the bikini area and see what happens.

If you breakout from waxing, epilating will probably be no better. IME, epilating my feet (I had a new epilator, and not much leg hair) and legs did not cause breakouts, but doing a tiny patch on my chin did (again, curious, I've not used any other methods there since the hair is very fine. A lot of bikini line irritation likely comes from sweat and undies as much as hair removal, so using antiperspirant should help, as should exfoliation (Salux cloth!). I can epilate and get back to you later, if you'd like.

Oh, you might want to try tweezing to see if you breakout before investing in an epilator, even if you just do a little patch. It hurts less, too.
oceanhue 19th-May-2011 01:55 am (UTC)
Oh the tweezing doesn't cause any breakouts, just waxing

You might do okay, then. Epilating anywhere is painful/scary/exhilarating; I mean, it's like the roller coaster of hair removal methods. I was really afraid of catching my skin, which I managed to do on my knee (I'm not really sure how), but the blades reversed before I felt anything, it was just seeing it happen that was alarming. Trim first, because overly long hair will get caught in the epilator. I got a model that has a shaving head too (Braun something), so I can use that if I don't have time to epilate, which is most of the time.

I'm kinda crazy and I'm curious as to what it feels like, lol... I wanna try it to see TBH!
oceanhue 19th-May-2011 01:54 am (UTC)
the irritation is from the blade rubbing against my skin

If you see breakouts after epilating, chances are it's caused by a lack of exfoliation. Remember to always exfoliate the areas you use it on, especially areas that get oily or crease, like your face/neck and bikini area.

i use an epilator on basically my whole body, minus down there, where i get waxed. however, i have done my bikini line, and i think it is something your skin will get used to, like if you have ever epilated your underarms. just exfoliate to prevent ingrowns!

Idk if this will be of help but I just bought the bikini trimmer that's always advertised on tv made by Shick Quattro I think? It's heaven!! They say you can take the guard off for a closer shave and I did, hestitantly. But I was so surprised when I had NO irritation whatsoever! I HATE shaving but this is actually fun :P Makes the maitenence of those bits not so bad...

I haven't used an epilator designed specifically for the bikini area, which may actually be functional. A regular epilator I don't think you will be happy with. The one I have is too big to pull the skin tight around, and the looseness of the skin in the area is going to cause you pain, broken hairs, and probably a rash. If you can find the time to tweeze I think you will see better results as you can pull the skin tight around the individual hairs.

I use the braun epilator and it has chaaaanged my life, so amazing! Seriously once you're used to the pain it's 100% worth it, particularly for armpits and bikini line (I still shave my legs because it's a pain to let em grow out enough to epilate). If you are bendy you can get all them suckas "down there" with an epilator. When I got the courage to to my armpits stomping the pain out with my feet while I did it works like a charm. Now it's now problemo and I recommend it with no qualms.

How long does it last? I'm thinking of buying the small one. So Braun is better? :D

This is the one I have. I haven't used any others but I can't imagine anything better! You could try out others but I think anything with a cord would get really annoying. I have had mine since December and have had no problems with it.

if threading makes you break out eplilating will
hellloooo_nurse 20th-May-2011 05:29 am (UTC)
OUCH! I couldn't take it haha I have plucked before and barely felt anything and liked results but epilator killed and didn't even pull out some just broke in half :/ I used a braun one meant for bikini purposes
