Smelly Clarisonic

1:12 pm - 11/09/2010
My Clarisonic brush head smells gross, like mildew. After every use I rinse it really well, pat it dry, and cover it with the plastic cap. I wash it with anti-bacterial soap once a week. But every night when I go to use it, it smells incredibly bad. Am I doing something wrong?

When I remove the brush head to clean it, I also notice that the inside of the handle itself smells gross. Is it okay to clean it with soap and water, or will I damage it?

Hello there,

We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing smells with your Clarisonic brush head. We recommend that you wash your brush head with soap and warm water once a week. Which it sounds like you are doing regularly which is great. However, brush heads should be replaced every three months. So depending on how long you have had your brush it may be time for a replacement brush. You are welcome to rinse out the inside of the handle when you clean your brush. If you have additional questions or are still experiencing smells after you replace the brush head please let us know. Find us on Twitter @Clarisonic or facebook.com/Clarisonic. We're here to help.

Thank you for replying!

My Clarisonic is brand new, I bought it on October 22nd. Any thoughts on this?

I don't own a Clarisonic but I do have a cheaper manual brush that comes with a plastic cap. Maybe you should try leaving your Clarisonic uncapped till it dries and then capping it. That's what I do (on top of disinfecting it once a week) and I've never had a problem.

I had issues with my clarisonic heads smelling funky too
What I do now is after I use I remove the brush, rinse everything really well, but the plastic cap back on the brush and leave it to dry bristle side down( I only use mine in the shower)
So basically the head is only on the handle while I'm using it. I haven't had any smell problems since then

After you remove the head, do you run the handle under water? Is it okay to get water underneath where the brush head usually locks in place?

Yep I rinse off everything

I've had my Mia for a year and I haven't had any smelly problems. I usually leave the plastic cap off and only use it when I'm travelling.

I've found this extremely old thread on Google!

I am having the same problem so I tried soaking the brush head and cap in rubbing alcohol and spraying the handle with it. It's taken away the bad smell but now it smells of alcohol! Urgh.. I tried submerging the brush head in water for a few hours to remove the alcoholic smell, it's not really helping... Tried washing it with a fragranced face wash as well, still isn't helping.. any thoughts? ._.

woah, such an old thread! after making this post i just started washing the brush head with a bit of gentle hand soap before every use. i've been doing this for a few years now, don't mind at all, and i'm still using my clarisonic every day!

I have Mia2 and I just recently soaked the Brush Head in Hydrogen Peroxide for a few minutes. Happy to report it smells and feels clean. However the Handle Head part does not, even after I took a Qtip soaked in Hydrogen Peroxide and swiped all around the compartment. I'd like to know if it's safe to Pour Hydrogen Peroxide in the head compartment or to soak the handle head part in Hydrogen Peroxide or Alcohol?

I actually had this problem too and it was the handle, I washed it with boiling hot water and just scrubbed it clean, I'm not sure about older models but if you have a fairly recent model the clarisonic is water tight and should have not problems submerging it in a little water. I'm not sure about peroxide but I have read of others doing it and it being okay, I would just pour a little in the brush head compartment and swirl it around but I'm not 100% sure this would be okay
