Self Tanner

4:42 pm - 09/16/2010

I want to thank softstarz  for suggesting the use of black tea as a self tanner. I started out fairly pale skin and now I have a nice natural glow. It's not orange at all and I don't think it looks fake on me (I will have to ask the boyfriend for another opinion).

At my palest during the winter (I probably had a little more color since it's summer before trying the tea)

 Darker me

I basically bought a 100pk of tea bags. I took 10 bags, 4c of water, and brought the water to a rolling boil. I then put the bags into the water and let it mix. I then left it on the counter to cool off for a bit. When it was slightly warmer than room temperature I pour the tea into a spray bottle. I then stripped down in the shower and sprayed myself. I rubbed in any droplets because that could lead to darker spots. I then let that air dry fully, which didn't take long, before putting clothing back on. I actually really like this vs any self tanner because I can get my back, there aren't streaks or missing spots, it's natural, and I can apply this to my face without worrying about getting it in my eyes or mouth.

Note: The 4cups was a bit excessive. I'd probably suggest a bit less. probably 2cups & 5 bags.

I'm just so happy I found something natural and cheap (~$2 USD)!

How long does it last?
miaoudeminou 16th-Sep-2010 10:20 pm (UTC)
I've heard 3-4 days but this is my first time trying it out. I'll let you know :)

WOW looks great! I have to ask because it is the one thing that keeps me away from self tanners is how does it smell? I've never smelled black tea before.
miaoudeminou 16th-Sep-2010 10:38 pm (UTC)
Oh it doesn't smell even close to the fake ones. This has a very light tea smell to it. I sprayed the tea on around 12-1pm and it's now 5:40 and I can't smell it.

Thanks! I'm going to try this :)

Black tea is, well, normal tea, the kind you'd brew in a pot, or make iced tea of. I bet you've smelled it before.
behindmyeyes14 17th-Sep-2010 05:16 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I know it's normal tea. I just didn't know if black tea had some type of different smell (like lemony,or some just smell funky). Also, I wasn't sure if when applied to the body it would change the smell of the tea. Thanks though :)

It might smell different if you use different kinds of black tea, like Earl Grey (which smells slightly citrus-y) or Darjeeling (which has sort of a floral smell). That's what I like most about this method of self-tanning; you can choose the scent! :)

I'm glad it worked. Thanks for posting your review. Bonus: the tea has antioxidants that are good for your skin.

You look awesome!! I'm so glad to hear of a safe, natural temporary fake tan. Do you think if I used more tea, it would get me more tan? I was planning on being Snookie for Halloween...:)
miaoudeminou 18th-Sep-2010 12:11 am (UTC)
First off that's awesome you want to be her for Halloween. Second I have no idea and you'll have to experiment. I believe though that the more bags to less water will def make it darker. I was actually going to experiment with this within the next few days (tomorrow or Monday). I was going to take my left over batch and use that tea water to brew more bags to see if I could get darker.
softstarz 18th-Sep-2010 04:14 am (UTC)
I would also say to try it in gradual steps. Don't try to achieve a dark look in the first try, but apply a mist each day so it will build. This way it will be very even.

So cool!! I just got a bad farmers tan but my face is still WHITE, so I will definitely try this!

Did you use regular or decaf tea? How long did you let it brew/mix with the water?
miaoudeminou 18th-Sep-2010 04:00 am (UTC)
All the info is in the post for you :)
v_odka 18th-Sep-2010 04:19 am (UTC)
Okay, this is seriously awesome. I usually don't worry about being tan but for special occasions (Halloween is coming up, for instance), I am definitely going to try this out!
logicalharmony 18th-Sep-2010 05:10 am (UTC)
I've been SO curious about this for a long time but never had the guts to try it. This is awesome to know! I'm definitely going to give it a try!

Sooooo ... now that it's been like 5 days, how is it? Have you had to reapply? Do you have any other pictures?

Sorry for all the questions but this is amazing news to me and it looks great on you so I'm hoping it would work for me too, hah!
